About

COLDIA is a research group based in Tampere, Finland investigating the co-occurrence of childhood acute leukemia and type 1 diabetes.

Childhood leukemia and type 1 diabetes are both serious pediatric diseases. Type 1 diabetes is more common in Finland than in any other country and leukemia is the most common cancer in childhood. Previous studies have indicated a common clustering of the diseases and it the diseases share common risk factors such as exposure or avoidance to common pathogens in childhood.

The goal of our group is to shed light on the exact reasons for the co-occurrence of the diseases and also to make observations of the phenomenon in Finland at the population level. Understanding the link between the diseases could provide insight into the etiology of both diseases and could pave way for new preventive measures.

We have secured funding, acquired the necessary permits, dynamically expanded our datasets of the relevant variables, actively recruited new members and published multiple findings in peer-reviewed journals.
